Manawatu PARS

New Zealand PARS can trace its origins back to the late 1800’s, making it one of the oldest social services in the country, although there is evidence that prison visiting existed before that time. Manawatu PARS was established as an incorporated society in 1959. Its main role was to provide material aid, food, clothing and support to ex-inmates and their families. This was done by volunteers until 1983 when the first paid field officer was employed. The service now operates in Manawatu, Horowhenua, Hawkes Bay and Wellington, with paid staff and a dedicated team of professional, committed volunteers who support its programes in prison and in the community.
